In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) was first successfully performed in England followed by success in the United States at the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine. Originally, IVF was considered "experimental" but now it is an accepted first line treatment for many infertile couples.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) has been used to treat infertility for many years and is most often indicated where there is mild male factor infertility.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) allows the embryologist and physician to screen embryos for certain inherited genetic diseases. These diseases include

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), is performed as a type of an IVF techniques and involves placement of a single sperm directly into the egg. The sperm can be obtained from and ejaculate, or in the case of severe male factor infertility, directly from the male reproduc-tive tract. Eggs are delicate and embryolo- gists use sophisticated micro- manipulation equipment and microscopic needles to pierce the egg and insert the sperm
